Milwaukee man sentenced after killing ex-girlfriend's boyfriend in August of last year
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee man was sentenced Wednesday morning for shooting and killing a 20-year-old man near 19th and Forest Home Avenue nearly one year ago.
One by one, family members of Detavius Ollie spoke about the tragic loss their family faced after 26-year-old Trevion Carney shot and killed Ollie.
“The day that they told me that he was gone, my light went out,” said Katie Brown, Ollie’s grandmother.
On Aug. 23 of last year, Milwaukee police responded to the shooting near 19th and Forest Home Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Ollie had been shot 16 times.
“My son was my heartbeat,” said Martavia Stanfore, Ollie’s mother. “Cowardly act. My son was running away, and he shot him.”
Ollie identified then-25-year-old Trevion Carney as the shooter before he died.
“Me and my family suffer every single day,” said Marteonna Bean, Ollie’s sister.
“I’m trying with all of my might to forgive Carney, but it’s so hard,” said Stanfore.
Investigators say Carney and Ollie were both dating the same woman. Carney arrived at the woman’s apartment in a mask with a rifle, broke down the door, and shot Ollie. The woman escaped.
“This was a heinous act, all over a girl,” said Stanfore.
Carney later turned himself in and pleaded guilty to first degree reckless homicide.
“I will spend the rest of my life regretting this,” said Carney.
In court, Ollie’s family told the courtroom they grieve his death every day.
“I have to visit my brother in the cemetery for the rest of my life,” said Bean.
Carney was sentenced to 45 years in prison with an additional 25 years of extended supervision.
