MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Hundreds of local high school sophomores spent Thursday morning at Maritime Interaction Day at two locations near Lake Michigan.
There, they heard from professionals who make their living on the water, and they even got to try their hand at activities like line throwing, radio communications, simulated welding and more.
We're told the maritime industry is experiencing a shortage of workers.
"Like many skilled industries, the maritime industry is...we have experienced professionals retiring," said Captain Beth Fernandez. "And that creates an ongoing demand for skilled and motivated young workers."
Capt. Fernandez tells us the students asked questions about what kind of jobs are available, about food and entertainment, and if she's seen anything interesting on the water.
