Milwaukee forwards new signage in effort to reach out to those struggling with mental health, suicide
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The City of Milwaukee has made a new effort to reach out to people struggling with mental health or suicide.
New suicide prevention signs have been put up in some Milwaukee parks. City leaders celebrated the installations earlier this morning, Nov. 13.
As these signs are put up, they hope to educate the community about what resources are available for help.
As Dr. Sara Kolbeck explains, the city used data from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office to build a heat map for where suicides have happened in the past.
They put up the signs around those areas to offer hop and resources for help.
"There has been research that has shown that even putting five or ten seconds between a person and their decision to end their life can make a difference," Dr. Kolbeck said. "So, by placing these signs in the community, we're giving that sort of pause to folks who might be considering suicide, giving that place for maybe a second thought."
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. Call 988 or text the word "Home" to 741-741 to be connected with a counselor.
