Milwaukee County Zoo Director Chuck Wikenhauser announces retirement

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Zoo announced Wednesday, Feb. 10, after more than 30 years on the job, Zoo Director Chuck Wikenhauser will retire. 

Wikenhauser oversaw a lot of changes at the zoo since 1990. The new "Hippo Haven" opened last year. You've seen renovations of the aviary and the primates exhibit, and Wikenhauser focused on strengthening the zoo's role in conservation and animal welfare.

“Working at the Milwaukee County Zoo has been a huge part of my life’s work, and it’s my hope that throughout my time here, we, as an institution, continued to evolve to meet the needs of the animals in our care and the audiences we served,” said Wikenhauser.   

His retirement takes effect on April 1.
