Milwaukee County Executive Crowley delivers 2026 budget address

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley presented his 2026 budget proposal Tuesday, and while he says the county is in better financial shape than it was two years ago, it still faces a $46 million deficit.

Crowley cites several factors for the deficit, including things like inflation, declining federal funding, and overtime deficits at the sheriff's office. As the county looks ahead, cost cutting and raising revenue is going to be a priority.

"Milwaukee County has made significant progress towards our goal, but we know we continue to face fiscal challenges," Crowley said.

He's proposing a $12 million increase in the property tax levy, along with other measures. A joint statement from several county supervisors also highlights cost cutting in Crowley's budget, including a $17.6 million cut to behavioral services and service reductions for public transit.

The budget proposes $16 million for the renovation of the courthouse complex, $5 million for the Mitchell Park Domes, and money for a new entrance to the zoo.

A public hearing for the county's budget plan is set for Oct. 27 at the Mitchell Park Domes.
