MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Despite it not being an election year, Milwaukee County is celebrating National Voter Registration Day Sept. 16.
The annual countywide movement works to remove any barriers to voter registration.
It also ensures voters are registered and prepared for the upcoming election cycle well in advance so they aren't scrambling close to an upcoming election.
"Registering in advance allows people to know what's on their ballots hopefully know where they have to go to vote on election day, and just gets them vote ready," said Milwaukee Elections Director Michelle Hawley.
This is the 14th anniversary of National Voter Registration Day. Since its inception, the initiative has helped more than six million Americans vote across the United States.
