Menomonee River Valley enriched with 4 murals in 2023
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's Menomonee River Valley is now adorned with four new murals, marking an expansion of public art in the area. In a collaborative effort involving local artists, community members and several organizations, these murals were completed in 2023.
Three of these art pieces are situated on public infrastructure, while one is on private property, each reflecting the cultural and natural heritage of the area.
Milwaukee-based artist Fred Kaems installed murals on the 16th St. Viaduct at West Canal St., featuring scenes of natural wetlands and silhouettes of lake fish and ducks.
Thyla Arden and Ayda Rosé from Unnaturell Design Co. added their artistic touch on the 16th St. Viaduct at West St. Paul Ave., focusing on the native flora of the area.
At the Materials Recovery Facility, artist Nova Czarnecki's mural screen aims to prevent debris from entering the river, illustrating elements from Kenneth Grahame’s "Wind in the Willows."
Mi Salgado's series of 10 murals at 1500 W. St. Paul Ave. aims to capture the essence of nature, culture and the spirit of the Valley.
Claudia Paetsch, VP of Human Resources at Marquette University and board member of Menomonee Valley Partners and the Menomonee Valley Business Improvement District, shared her thoughts in a press release issued earlier this month. "The murals on St. Paul Ave. and on the 16th St. Viaduct are like an outdoor art gallery that reflect the renewed vibrancy of this area."
