MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Public transit systems in Milwaukee County and Waukesha are rolling out a new way to pay for riding the bus.

The fare collection system called WisGo begins Saturday.

The more you ride, the more you save. That was the main message from Wednesday's announcement.  It's a message bus riders say they can get behind.

"By launching fare capping, Milwaukee is joining other world class cities like London and New York, where we are seeing ridership return to pre-pandemic levels," said Bonnie Crawford, Umo Mobility general manager.

City leaders unveiled a plan Wednesday morning to cut costs for bus riders in both Milwaukee and Waukesha counties.

"Milwaukee County Transit effectively found a barrier hidden in place, looked at the needs of our community and made the changes to increase affordable access," said Priscilla Coggs-Jones, Milwaukee County supervisor.

The plan will allow for all bus riders to ride for free after paying a certain amount in fares. The free rides will begin when riders hit $4 a day, $19.50 a week and $72 a month.

"It makes it so anyone who is visiting Milwaukee County, or the region, or who commutes every day can easily tap on and get where they are going."

It's a move passengers say will save them money.

"In the summer, I don't have the school bus pass. They cut it off for me during the summer. That will be great for me," said passenger Niall Brady.

People are encouraged to download the Umo app, and if you can't download it, you can purchase WisGo cards from any local store.

In order to receive the free rides, you must use one form of payment -- either the fare card or the app.
