Man charged in connection to string of shots fired incidents in Waukesha County
WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A man has been charged in connection to a string of shots fired incidents in Waukesha County in January along with a crash and police shootout.
Thirty-one-year-old Joseph Fliss has been charged with 17 different counts including attempted first-degree intentional homicide, reckless endangering of safety and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The criminal complaint states that on January 24, 2026, police responded to the area of Wyngate Way for a report of two homes struck by gunfire around 8:30 p.m. Around the same time, a home on River Valley Road was also hit.
The next day on January 25 around 3:45 a.m., a home on Greenfield Avenue in New Berlin was hit by gunfire.
Prosecutors say that they were able to identify a suspect vehicle traveling through the areas using footage from nearby businesses. The vehicle was identified as a Honda Accord belonging to Fliss.
A few days later, on January 31, Brookfield police responded to a crash near Baker Road, around 10:30 p.m. Authorities state that three vehicles were involved, including the Honda Accord being driven by Fliss.
According to the complaint, Fliss was speeding northbound down Baker Road when he crashed into the back of a Nissan Rogue, causing the Nissan to crash into a telephone. The complaint states Fliss continued northbound and crashed into the driver's side of a BMW, coming to a rest in a grassy area just west of north of Baker Road.
When officers arrived, they started searching the area after reports that Fliss fled the scene. During the search, Fliss shot at officers, who returned fire. Fliss was hit in the abdomen and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
One officer received minor injuries during the shootout.
Officers believe that Fliss was under the influence and a blood draw revealed that Fliss had an ethanol amount of 0.126/100 mL.
Prosecutors also state at the time of the crash, Fliss was traveling 121 miles per hour, 3.5 seconds before impact with the Nissan Rogue. About .5 seconds before impact, he engaged the breaks, slowing down to 104 miles per hour. Upon impact, Fliss was traveling around 96 miles per hour.

- Two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
- Nine counts of first degree recklessly endangering safety.
- One count of possession of a firearm while intoxicated.
- One count of operating while intoxicated causing injury.
- One count with prohibited alcohol concentration causing injury.
- One count of a hit-and-run causing injury.
- Two counts of endangering safety by reckless use of a firearm.
