WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) – Police have connected a crash and shootout in Brookfield to a string of shots fired calls in Waukesha and potentially New Berlin, with a 31-year-old man in critical condition.

At a news conference on Monday, Captain Joe Hendricks, with the City of Waukesha Criminal Investigations Division, described the series of crimes that are considered unusual for the area.

“Incidents of this nature are not common here. But when they do occur, our officers and investigators work diligently to identify those responsible and hold them accountable,” Hendricks said.

According to Waukesha police, officers were called to a report of shots fired on Wyngate Way in the City of Waukesha Jan. 24 as a home was hit with gunfire around 8:30 p.m. Around the same time, a home on River Valley Road was also hit. A 24-year-old Brookfield police officer returned fire, and the 31-year-old suspect was hit and wounded. No officers were struck by gunfire. Police say one officer received minor injuries while responding to the threat of active gunfire.

At a news conference on Monday, Feb. 2, police did not provide any details about the suspect. They were able to confirm the car in the crash was connected to the events in Waukesha and Brookfield. Officers are still working to confirm if the New Berlin case is connected.

Police said they have not determined what led to the vehicle’s crash in Brookfield.

While the shots fired calls appear to be random, police said they are still investigating a motive.
