MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- How old were you when you learned the difference between a savings account and a checking account? Or what interest was on a loan or a credit card?

Some sixth-graders in Milwaukee are getting an early taste of what it's like to manage money.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson attended a graduation ceremony at Alexander Mitchell School on the south side Tuesday, May 19. It was for sixth-graders who've been learning real-world money skills at an early age.

"For the last six weeks, we've been studying about financial literacy, savings, checkings, interest, loans, etcetera, etcetera," said Principal Kim Malacara. "And the children have learned a lot of information that they will take into their adulthood."

"Those things help you out when you try to do many things, whether you're trying to save for college, start a business, buy a house, you know, accomplish whatever goals," Mayor Johnson said.

The six-week program was a partnership with Old National Bank and the Daisie Foundation, an organization dedicated to creating opportunities for women and children.
