MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Area Technical College wants people to know that they're offering a remarkable opportunity to launch careers.
It's a full-ride scholarship, and if you're interested, you have until Jan. 5 to apply.
The scholarship is a gift from Ellen and Joe Checota. They've committed $5 million for students who want a short-term technical diploma or a certificate from MATC.
Scholarships cover tuition, course fees, books, supplies, even child care for students who want careers in fields like plumbing, welding, woodworking, appliance technician and more.
One graduate says he was in prison four years ago, and the scholarship program turned his life around.
"And they gave me the scholarship, the free ride," said Anthony Owens, diesel and powertrain graduate. "I completed a high level. Right now I'm making $33 an hour at GFL. I'm starting my own company, Triple A Trucking."
"These jobs offer economic stability for families, neighborhoods and the entire city," said Mayor Cavalier Johnson.
