Racine & Me: Community invited to help create colorful art installation at Racine Art Museum

RACINE, WI (CBS 58) -- This summer, the Racine Art Museum is inviting the community to become part of a one-of-a-kind public art project.

Renowned textile artist Amanda Browder is partnering with RAM to create Zig and Zag, a large-scale fabric installation that will transform the museum's iconic acrylic-paneled façade with vibrant, multi-colored fabric, giving visitors a fresh perspective on the familiar building.

The installation is truly a community effort. Using donated fabric, local residents and visitors are invited to help sew the artwork together during Community Sewing Days taking place July 21 through July 31 at locations throughout Racine. Participants can pin fabric, sew pieces together, or simply stop by to connect with others. All ages are welcome, though children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Community Sewing Days will be held at several locations, including the Dr. John Bryant Community Center, Douglas Park Community Center, RAM's Wustum Museum, Sew 'N' Save of Racine, the Racine Farmers Market, Lake Oaks Senior Apartment Homes, the Racine Public Library, Stitched Quilt Shop, and Unraveled Creative Studio.

The completed installation will debut on September 18 during RAM's inaugural In/Between multi-arts festival. Spanning Racine County's built and natural landscapes along Lake Michigan, the mostly free public festival will feature exhibitions, performances, workshops, talks, wellness activities, social events, and more, transforming everyday spaces into places of creativity.
