Prosecutors say 25-year-old Luis Barahona Lopez broke into his ex-girlfriend's home near 52nd and National in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 19, and stabbed a man repeatedly while he was sleeping. The victim was identified by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office as 28-year-old Jose Samuel Valdivia. 

According to the criminal complaint, Lopez told investigators he had a restraining order with his ex, but after a friend told him she was at a bar with another man, "something was telling him to go see her."

Lopez reportedly said once inside the woman's home, he saw her lying on the bed next to a man and "started to get mad, blacked out, went to the kitchen, grabbed two small knives from the knife holder and kicked in the door to the bedroom." 

Prosecutors say Lopez admitted to stabbing the man and said he thought his ex also got hurt. A preliminary autopsy report indicates Lopez stabbed Valdivia 17 times, according to the complaint. Police said the woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries.

After the attack, officials say Lopez fled the scene.

He's charged with first degree intentional homicide and first degree recklessly endangering safety, domestic abuse.

Court records show bond has been set at $150,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 4.
