Local venue offers free alternative to engaged couples displaced by domes closure
It's usually held in a different space.
"The domes are closed," said Franklin resident Wayne Wagner.
But Thursday night, the show went on for the Music Under Glass concert at the annex greenhouse. It's next door to the Mitchell Park Domes that are closed because of structural problems.
"They must have known for years something was going on and now it's to the point they have to do something for fear of somebody getting hit by a piece of concrete," said Wagner.
Wagner and his wife enjoy the staple winter concert event and can't imagine the city without it or the domes.
"It would be sad," he said.
It's a feeling Clai Green wants to take away from couples tying the knot.
"I've watched the show Bridezillas before, so I can't even imagine how crazy some of these people could possibly be," said Green.
Green is part owner of The Point in Walker's Point, located at 906 S. Barclay.
His team is offering the space for free to any couple whose wedding was canceled because of the domes closure. The deal includes lighting, a DJ area, staff and set up of tables and chairs.
"I'm a firm believer of working within the community," he said.
The Point can hold 375 people. There's even an outdoor space for summer weddings.
Green said the goal is to make engaged couples happy, and that for Wagner means saving the domes landmark.
"I realize there's a terrible cost to it, but the piper has to be paid I guess," Wagner said.
The Point has about 20 dates open for weddings and the venue is working with other local businesses for specials. For more information, call (414) 364-3761 or email, [email protected].
Remember, Milwaukee County is holding a domes public hearing is on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. at the annex greenhouse next door.
