'It's my fault': Man charged in crash that killed 4-year-old Sheboygan girl
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 23-year-old man has been charged in a crash that killed a 4-year-old girl in Sheboygan.
The crash happened on April 12, near 21st and Saemann Avenue between a pickup truck and minivan. Officials say the driver of truck, identified as Nathan Heitzmann, failed to stop at the intersection and collided with the minivan.
A mother and her two young children were on a walk when the crash occurred and one of the vehicles jumped the curb and struck them. Four-year-old Cordelia Kuether was killed in the incident.
The drivers of both vehicles remained at the scene following the crash.
According to a criminal complaint, Heitzmann does not have a valid driver's license. When officials informed Heitzmann he didn't have a valid license, he allegedly said, "Wow I thought I still had a point or two left, but ok, I knew it was close, I'm on and off the fricking license."
Heitzmann, according to the complaint, went on to say, "I can tell you exactly what happened, this is my fault…. I looked, I stopped at the
stop sign ok, looked back and forth, saw them playing on the corner, when I looked to the right, I did only look once, I’m not gonna lie, and it was kind of quick, and I did not see any car, but I’m assuming they were behind my A-pillar, that was just perfect out of my view, it’s my fault.”
Heitzmann has been charged with one count of knowingly operate a motor vehicle while suspended - causing death.
In court on Monday, May 1, a judge set Heitzmann's bond at $5,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 10.
