Catalytic converter theft disrupts bus service for Oak Creek-Franklin students

OAK CREEK, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Go Riteway issued a statement Monday morning, Sept. 14, to report they discovered 37 of their vehicles were vandalized over the weekend at their Oak Creek facility, with catalytic converters being stolen.
They say they were able to coordinate routes throughout the morning in coordination with the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District, including ensuring a plan for the afternoon routes.
Despite having security cameras and fences, "school bus lots continue to be a target of organized theft due to metals in catalytic converters having a high scrap value," the document added.
The school district updated families Monday morning, saying students who arrived at school late or were unable to find a way to school because of the bus situation, would have the tardy or absence marked as "school excused."
Police shared photos of the men they say trespassed the Go Riteway facility near 10th and Rawson in Oak Creek. They say the men spent a little over an hour stealing the catalytic converters early Sunday morning.
Last November, the exact same facility had catalytic converters stolen from 26 buses.
Oak Creek police are asking anyone with information to reach out.

Go Riteway is still assessing the extent of the theft and determining how many buses will be available, the district said. Families able to transport their children to school were asked to do so. The district said it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
