OZAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Recently, a scam has been going around in Ozaukee County that resulted in at least one report of a robbery.
According to Grafton police, a citizen had reported to authorities a person came to their door claiming to be a We Energies employee and requested access to the home for service.
The suspect asked the homeowner to go to the basement and run the water for 30 minutes.
The suspect proceeded to steal large amounts of jewelry and coins from the homeowner.
CBS 58 spoke to a We Energies spokesperson who had some helpful tips on avoiding getting scammed.
"If someone comes to your door and says they're from We Energies, the very first thing you should do is ask to see an ID," said Brendan Conway of We Energies. "Our employees and contractors know if you go to a door and someone asks to see an ID, show it to them. Our employees want to prove that they are legitimate."
Even if you're not sure about someone claiming to be from We Energies, call the company to confirm.
