MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers confirmed he plans to sign a bill that would ban people from using food stamps to buy candy and soft drinks.

That bill was amended earlier this month to include $72 million that will make up for the loss of federal funding under President Donald Trump's "One Big, Beautiful Bill."

Evers says GOP leaders only greed to provide the funding if it was tied to new restrictions on how FoodShare benefits can be spent.

CBS 58 asked Gov. Evers about it Wednesday. He said he disagrees with the new restrictions but felt it was more important to secure the additional money.

"I think people should have the ability to make those choices when they're getting their food, but at the end of the day, this is one that's really important. So, I was happy to do that. You know, it's one of those things we call compromise," said Evers.

The federal funding cuts means states will have to cover a bigger share of the costs related to welfare programs.
