Grafton police accepting food donations instead of payment for winter parking tickets
Storyblocks GRAFTON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Grafton Police Department announced Tuesday, Dec. 2, that residents who receive winter parking tickets can choose to pay in the form of food donations.
The policy started Monday, Dec. 1 and will last through Jan. 15, giving residents who receive parking tickets an opportunity to either pay the $20 fine as normal or bring in $10 worth of canned goods or non-perishable food items.
All donated items will be given to Family Sharing of Ozaukee County.
"Nobody enjoys issuing parking tickets -- it takes our officers away from proactive community patrols," said Chief Jeff Caponera. "This program allows us to enforce necessary winter parking rules while giving back to families who need support most."
The police department also welcomes food donations from any community member wishing to help local families. All donations must be submitted by Jan. 22 at the Grafton Police Department.
