Natalie's Everyday Heroes update: Tosa teen introduces bill in Madison
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- It's been more than a year since we first told you about a teenager in Wauwatosa who wants to change state law to protect animals.
Now, she is one step closer to making that dream come true. Abby Wurzburger introduced a piece of legislation in Madison last week. She worked alongside State Representative Robyn Vining, who represents Elm Grove and parts of Brookfield and Tosa, to make it happen.
"Her work is really impressive, it's inspiring," Rep. Vining said at a press conference at the state Capitol.
Following a quick introduction, Abby Wurzburger stepped up to the microphone like a seasoned professional.
"My name is Abby Wurzburger, and I am a 14-year-old from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin," Wurzburger said.
She's introducing the Wisconsin Humane Cosmetics Act.
"Many animals are being used in painful cosmetic experiments in Wisconsin," she said.
Her parents watched as she took this huge step in Madison, in what has been her years-long effort to ban animal testing in the state.
"Hard to find the right words to really describe that," said her dad, Dave Wurzburger.
"It's been a really cool experience to do that," she admitted with a smile.
It's a bill she's been working on with Rep. Vining.
"Young people have a vision for what they want their future to look like. And I think it's our job, as adults, to get behind them in that," Vining said.
We first introduced you to Wurzburger in January of 2025. She became an animal activist after becoming a vegetarian. And she reached out to Vining's office.
"She showed up researched, prepared. Ready to go," Vining said.
That research included finding cruelty-free products. And getting family and friends to make the switch.
"She does it on her own. She, this is what she does in her free time. She's emailing people and doing research," said her mom, Dana Wurzburger.
Her commitment led her to her big day in Madison, and she doesn't plan on slowing down any time soon.
"I love animals. They don't deserve to be tested on, and it's just important to me to help them because they're living beings as well," Abby said.
The Wisconsin Humane Cosmetics Act was introduced on March 10. It has a Senate sponsor and multiple co-sponsors. Vining said it will be submitted for a bill number later this month.
