MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers announced Monday, Oct. 16 he's directing emergency funding to child care centers.
In a video message, Gov. Evers announced he's putting $170 million toward the Child Care Counts Stabilization Payment Program.
Gov. Evers' office says it'll help support 4,400 care centers in Wisconsin and, "prevent the collapse of our state's child care industry."
The emergency funds are coming from federal pandemic aid.
"While I'm hopeful this investment will stave off an urgent collapse of our state's childcare industry, this is a stopgap measure and will still not make our child care providers whole," Gov. Evers said.
The announcement comes after Republicans rewrote Gov. Evers' special session bill providing tax cuts and expanding the child tax cut instead.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on that plan Tuesday, Oct. 17, but it's likely to get vetoed by Evers, who called the counterproposal, "unserious."
