Gold Star families can personalize license plates at no cost starting July 1
Wisconsin Department of Transportation MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Starting Wednesday, July 1, Gold Star family members in Wisconsin can personalize their Gold Star Family license plates without paying the $15 fee, Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday, June 30.
Evers signed the change into law in December as 2025 Wisconsin Act 50, permanently waiving the personalization fee for the plates, which are available only to immediate family members of service members killed in the line of duty.
"This is a small but meaningful way for the state to honor the bravery and sacrifice of our military heroes and to recognize their families who miss them, love them and mourn them every day," Evers said.
There are currently 483 active Gold Star license plates in Wisconsin, with 296 of those personalized, according to WisDOT.
