Germantown resident scammed out of $1,900 in secret shopper check scam

GERMANTOWN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Germantown Police are warning citizens after a resident recently reported a scam that involved a check and Walmart.

The resident got a check in the mail to take part in a secret shopper program. The man received a check for $2,250 with instructions to deposit the check into his account and then go to Walmart and do a money transfer of $1,850. The instructions say the fee for the transfer is $50 and the resident gets to keep $300 as compensation.

A number of days later after the check was processed the bank discovered it was fake and the victim was required to return the full $2,250 and was scammed out of $1,900.

According to police, one way they could tell the check was fake was by feeling the numbers at the bottom which were raised and should be smooth.

If it is too good to be true, it usually is.
