Free summer meals available for Milwaukee County kids through USDA program

Hunger Task Force

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Kids under 18 can get free meals throughout the summer through the Summer Food Service Program, with sites located at parks, schools and local clubs across Milwaukee County.

The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, aims to keep children fed when school isn't in session.

Hunger Task Force coordinates local meal sites under what it calls the "Milwaukee Model," connecting partners such as Milwaukee Public Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs and Centers for Independence to more than 170 locations throughout the city.

According to Hunger Task Force, only 10% of children who receive free meals during the school year also receive free meals in the summer, with awareness cited as the biggest barrier to access.

Families inside and outside Milwaukee County can find meal sites through the USDA's Summer Meals Site Finder online.
