Fond du Lac hit-and-run leaves 8-year-old seriously injured, suspect in custody
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Police are investigating a hit-and-run that left an 8-year-old child seriously injured Friday, Nov. 6.
Fond du Lac police responded to the Richards and Sons Bakery parking lot at 88 Forest Avenue around 2:30 p.m., for a car that had struck a child and fled the scene.
First responders found an 8-year-old unconscious in the parking lot with a head injury.
The suspect vehicle was spotted several blocks away by an officer who attempted to stop the vehicle.
Police say the suspect began a high speed chase, reaching speeds of 80 mph towards the southern edge of the city.
After losing the vehicle near South Hickory Street and US Highway 151, Beaver Dam police spotted the suspect driving and gave chase.
The pursuit continued with assistance of the Columbus Police Department and Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
Columbus police utilized spiked stop strips and the suspect vehicle crashed.
Police say the child was taken by Flight for Life to Children's Hospital for serious injuries, but is said to be in stable condition.
The suspect, a 49-year-old Fond du Lac man, is currently being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail on numerous charges.
