MPD updates police pursuit policy after a string of deadly crashes in 2025
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) is updating its pursuit policy after a series of deadly crashes in 2025.
The biggest changes are one - speed can't be the only factor. There has to be one other example of dangerous driving before a chase can start.
Next, officers will no longer face discipline for ending a pursuit.
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman says the changes are an effort to strike the right balance.
"There are those who don't want it at all, there are those that who do want it and we have to walk a fine line in regards to how do we navigate all of these different interests and we still see bad behaviors going on," said Chief Norman.
Taking a look at the numbers, a third of all police chases in 2025 ended in a crash.
About half of those crashes ended with somebody getting hurt, including more than 50 innocent bystanders.
Six chases were deadly, resulting in nine deaths.
"I do understand the responsibility of what a 4,000-pound vehicle is to our community," said Chief Norman. "So with that, it's always a balancing act of damned if you or damned if you don't."
MPD confirms it's starting the process of getting two new pieces of chase technology.
The first is StarChase, which lets officers attach GPS monitors to the cars they're chasing, so they can follow up later.
They're also asking the city to buy something called the HAAS Alert Safety System.
