Flaming Kayak Prompts Water Rescue Response on Lake Monona

MONONA, Wis. (CHANNEL 3000)-

A flaming kayak spotted early Monday morning on Lake Monona prompted a rescue response, according to a release from the Madison Fire Department.

The fire department’s lake rescue team was called at 1:19 a.m. to assist the Monona Fire Department on a report of a fire on a boat about 75 yards off of Schluter Park. Monona firefighters said that at one point the flames on the boat were 20 feet high.

The lake rescue team launched at Olin Park and found a green plastic kayak burned and melted but still floating. The tip of the kayak was still burning.

The Lake Rescue Team put out the fire and loaded the kayak onto its boat.

The team used lights, radar, sonar and infrared detectors to determine if there was kayaker who needed to be rescued. They found no other debris or anything that would suggest the need for an underwater search.

The Monona Fire Department is investigating the fire.
