MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- On the soldiers' home grounds, tens of thousands of flags are in place at Wood National Cemetery ahead of an in-person Memorial Day service on Monday, May 30.
The cemetery opened in 1871. It was originally known only as Soldiers' Home Cemetery. It wasn't until 1937, when the name was changed to honor General George Wood, a longtime member of the Soldiers' Home's Board of Managers.
It became a national cemetery in 1973.
