WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The cities of Waukesha and Oconomowoc elected to discontinue their Flock Safety programs during Common Council sessions Tuesday night, Sept. 15.

Oconomowoc's council voted 5-2 to cancel the program.

In a press release Tuesday, the City of Waukesha announced their decision, citing a need for "trust, transparency, and confidence in vendor practices" in any long-term public safety partnership.

Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson said while the technology is an important component of modern policing, community trust is equally important. 

"The Waukesha Police Department will continue to pursue innovative tools that help officers solve crimes, recover property, and protect our residents," said Thompson. "Technology plays an important role in modern law enforcement, but effectiveness alone is not enough. Transparency, accountability, and public confidence are fundamental to our mission. While Flock technology has assisted our officers in numerous investigations, we believe it is appropriate to move forward in a manner that reflects our values and preserves the trust our community places in us."

Waukesha's Flock program will be discontinued after 2026. The city says any future technology solutions considered will be "carefully reviewed to ensure they meet expectations regarding effectiveness, privacy protections, transparency, and public accountability."
