MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 42-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run on Milwaukee's near west side. Police are now looking for the driver of a red 2005 to 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

It happened around 11 p.m. near 35th and Wells.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Officer identified the woman as Nikki Houghton.

"She was a nice person, she use to come in the store every day," James Ramm said. He lives in the area.

Police say Houghton was crossing the street when a red SUV struck her. The driver kept going and didn't stop. Moments later another driver hit her, dragging her body several feet. The second driver, a 45-year-old Milwaukee man, stood by to wait for police and has since been arrested.

"She was very strong, it seems like she was getting her life back together," Tasha D. said. She was a close friend.

Houghton's family released a statement to CBS 58:

"Nikki had a big heart and was loved by everybody in the city of Milwaukee as well as our family all in the north parts of Wisconsin. She will be deeply missed by each and every one of us."

The incident is still under investigation, and Milwaukee police are seeking an unknown suspect at this time.

Police say the red SUV they are searching for was last seen driving north on 35th Street toward Wells Street. It should have damage to the front bumper and  it is missing one fog lamp.
