MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As the Darrell Brooks trial enters its third week in court, the state says the case could wrap up on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Defendant Darrell Brooks is facing 76 charges, including six counts of first-degree intentional homicide, after being accused of driving through the Christmas parade in Waukesha last year.

It's been two weeks of emotional testimony from witnesses and other officials.

"My thought then was we were involved in some kind of terrorist act. It was overwhelming fear, overwhelming panic amongst everyone in downtown Waukesha," said Lukas Hallmark with the Catholic Community of Waukesha.

On Friday, Oct. 14, Ralph Salyers III, a Waukesha police officer, testified that he was walking to his car when he heard a crash.

When he turned, he saw the driver of a maroon SUV, who he later identified as Brooks, park in a driveway.

“He came around to the front of the vehicle, yelled f***, and appeared to be panicked, went back, and got items out of the driver’s side of the vehicle and then ran southbound," Salyers III said.

Another Waukesha police officer who found the car later said it was registered to Dawn Woods, who is known as Brooks' mother. They also said other documentation inside of the vehicle had Brooks' name.

On Thursday, Oct. 13, Brooks tried to undermine the legitimacy of the case against him with jurors still in the room, but he was shut down by Judge Jennifer Dorow.

"I will not have you claim legitimacy for what are debunked, frivolous, sovereign arguments," the judge said.

Brooks will be given the opportunity to present his opening statement and call witnesses to the stand after the state rests its case.
