MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- At the Wilson Park Senior Center Friday, County Executive David Crowley proclaimed the month of May as Mental Health Awareness Month and Older Americans Month.
"And so we value our older adults within Milwaukee County, and we want to do whatever that we can do to make sure that we are improving the wellbeing, the longevity and the engagement in our community," Crowley said.
Research shows the social isolation and depression seniors often face are linked to physical problems like heart disease, stroke and even dementia.
"Most of the programs offered through our area agency on aging, and at our senior centers, power connections between older adults, and we know foster health and wellness," said Shakita LaGrant-McClain, executive director, county health and human services.
County health and aging officials are encouraging older adults to build social connections that can improve their health.
