Charges filed in deadly shooting of 17-year-old on Easter morning

Milwaukee County Jail/family

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 17-year-old is facing charges in connection with a shooting that left another 17-year-old dead.

Authorities say Donell Jones was shot and killed at a party near 23rd and Townsend just after 3 a.m. on Easter morning, April 20. Tawanda Staten, Jones' mother, said her son was at a party when shots were fired, hitting him and one other person. Milwaukee police say another 20-year-old person was injured.

Joseph Prado, of Milwaukee, has been charged in connection with the following:

  • Felony murder
  • Attempted armed robbery
  • Possession of a firearm by adjudicated delinquent

According to a criminal complaint, the shooting took place as people were leaving the party.

Prado told investigators -- according to the complaint -- after the party let out, he and a friend were outside and observed a person with whom his friend had a prior disagreement with. Prado allegedly wanted his friend and the other person to physically fight; he told investigators they chased a group down and "stuck up" one they caught.

Prado reportedly said he pointed a gun at this person and ordered them to give over their property. At that time, Prado said he heard someone shoot and that's when he discharged his firearm multiple times in response.

Authorities say Prado's description of events was consistent with surveillance video obtained.

In court May 2, a judge set Prado's bond at $500,000. He's due back in court for a preliminary hearing May 9.
