Relatives identified the victim as 42-year-old Greg McElwee, a father of six who lived near 94th St. and Carmen Avenue.
“He was always smiling, always happy, and always trying to help people,” said Patrick Dockins, McElwee’s uncle.
According to family members, McElwee was shot after someone came to the apartment complaining about noise.
Dockins said McElwee’s 13-year-old son witnessed the shooting.
“I got a call from his son, and he informed me that his father was just killed in front of him,” Dockins said. “He tried to resuscitate him.”
Police said the suspect fled the scene, leading officers on a chase that ended when a car crashed near 124th St. and Capitol Drive.
Investigators said a 29-year-old man was arrested.
Dockins said his nephew’s apartment was quiet before the shooting happened.
“There was a knock on the door, and he heard somebody complaining about noise,” Dockins said. “But there was no noise coming from their apartment. Their apartment was quiet.”
Family members described McElwee as a devoted father who cared deeply for his children.
“Such a senseless killing, such a waste of a good life,” Dockins said.
Dockins said the loss will have a lasting impact on McElwee’s teenage son.
“It’s going to be hard for his son to make an adjustment,” Dockins said. “I know his life is never going to be the same again.”
The family said a candlelight vigil will be held Thursday night at 7 p.m. near 94th and Carmen to honor McElwee’s life.
Family has started a GoFundMe to help with his kids and funeral costs.
