SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (CBS 58) — A 19-year-old Sheboygan man was arrested Sunday evening after police say he fled a traffic stop and later crashed into another vehicle.

Sheboygan police said officers attempted to stop the vehicle around 5:40 p.m. near South Eighth Street and Indiana Avenue because of excessive engine noise and other driving behavior.

The driver failed to stop and accelerated to a high rate of speed while traveling north on South 14th Street, according to police.

Officers pursued the vehicle for several blocks before ending the pursuit near North 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue because of the driver's dangerous behavior and speed.

Police said the vehicle continued north on North 14th Street.

Moments later, another officer responding to the area saw the suspect vehicle approaching North 14th Street and Superior Avenue. Police said that officer did not pursue the vehicle.

The driver allegedly entered the intersection at a high rate of speed against a red light and struck a vehicle traveling east on Superior Avenue.

The 19-year-old driver was arrested at the scene. Police said he was the only person in the vehicle.

He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, evaluated and later booked into the Sheboygan County Detention Center on multiple charges. Police said he did not appear to be injured.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 73-year-old Sheboygan man, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. He was the only person in his vehicle.

The intersection of North 14th Street and Superior Avenue was temporarily closed following the crash but has since reopened.

Sheboygan police said no additional information will be released at this time.
