Bradford and McKinley beaches closed through Saturday

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Bradford Beach and McKinley Beach will remain closed through Saturday, Aug. 16, following heavy rain and sewer overflows in the Milwaukee area.

The City of Milwaukee Health Department says the beaches are expected to reopen Sunday, pending no severe weather and acceptable water quality results.

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District reported recent combined sewer overflows were about 90% to 95% groundwater and rainwater. Some nearby communities released untreated wastewater into local waterways during the storm to prevent basement backups. Overflow water was not treated before entering waterways.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences advised the closure due to potential germs that can cause illness. The health department says the closure could be extended if the National Weather Service forecasts moderate or high surf or additional rain.
