RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Rescue crews were called out to North Pier along the Lake Michigan shore for a report of a 15-year-old who had fallen into the water.
It happened around 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
Dispatch was told that the 15-year-old boy was struggling to stay above water and that strong waves were pushing him further out into the lake.
Crews were able to rescue the boy who remains in stable condition at a local hospital.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the 15-year-old boy and his 16-year-old friend were walking on the icy shore along North Pier when the ice underneath them gave away, sending the 15-year-old into the water.
"If it wasn't for the quick actions of our first responders, we undoubtedly would have a much different outcome," Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said.
