BAY VIEW, Wis. (CBS 58) -- First graders from Bay View area schools were at Humboldt Park to help plant trees Wednesday.

It's part of the 21st annual Tree Day celebration. The goal is to get kids outside to appreciate the wonders of nature.

In addition to planting trees, they toured the park and learned about wildlife in the area.

"It really promotes our quality of life in our communities," said Humboldt Park Friends board member Jane LeCapitaine. "So trees play a very important role not only for humans, but for birds and for mammals and insects, etc."

The event also helps Milwaukee County replace its dying trees.

That's something the group Humboldt Park Friends says is important given the destruction caused by the Emerald Ash Borer.
