As Domestic Violence Awareness month nears, advocates urge folks in need to use available help

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Advocacy groups in Milwaukee are saying the domestic violence issue is getting worse. Groups like Sojourner Family Peace Center and The Asha Project are spreading awareness in October in hopes of getting a handle on the issue.

The Milwaukee Police Department and End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin have reported 19 domestic violence-related homicides in Milwaukee County this year.

According to Crystal Ayad of The Asha Project, they've calculated an even higher number, adding those who were caught in the crossfire.

"It was as of July this year there were 39 homicides that were domestic violence-related," said Ayad.

The majority of the victims are women of color.

Both Sojourner and The Asha Project offer shelter, healing programs and other necessities for domestic violence victims.

"Know that you're not alone and it's not your fault, and that there are people to help you," said President and CEO of Sojourner Family Peace Center Carmen Pitre.
