MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- On Friday, Aug.11, the second annual Fellowship Youth Open kicked off a Currie Park Golf Course, giving some area youth exposure to the sport.
"You never expect this many of us to be in one area, especially on the green, especially on the golf course," said 17-year-old Julian Cottrell with Milwaukee Fellows.
Milwaukee Fellows is a group dedicated to the academic advancement of Black men in Milwaukee.
And while the group focuses on academics, Friday, they were focused on their long drive.
"Today I learned about the different types of clubs there are, and I learned that you're not supposed to chip on the green, you're supposed to chip on the fringe and the ruff," said Cottrell.
During their visit to the golf course, the kids, ages 12-18, took part in a free clinic, introducing them to golf and beyond.
"It opens doors, it provides exposure to an entire world of opportunity," said Billy Young Director of the Milwaukee Fellowship Golf Tournament.
A sentiment felt by engineer hopeful, Cottrell.
"It would be nice to get out there with my engineer buddies, once and while, and go on the golf course and get a couple of plays in, maybe play a nine hole."
