CBS 58

FOND DU LAC COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- On Friday, May 30, Fond Du Lac County Sheriff's Department police pursued a speeding vehicle through the city of Fond Du Lac downtown area, which left three people injured and one suspect arrested.

The suspect has been identified to be a 19-year-old female from Green Bay.

An officer around 6:37 p.m. observed a vehicle going 50 miles per hour in a 25 miles per hour zone, northbound on S. Main St. near E. 10th St.

The vehicle increased its speed to over 80 miles per hour, in which the officer activated his lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

However, the vehicle increased speed and didn't stop.

Officers terminated the pursuit as they entered the busy downtown Fond Du Lac area in hopes the vehicle would decrease speed.

Instead, the vehicle continued speeding northbound on Main St. near the intersection of Western Ave. It passed multiple civilian vehicles by driving in the southbound lane. Near the intersection of Division St., it struck a southbound SUV.

The vehicle continued going northbound and struck several other civilian vehicles before coming to a stop near the intersection of Merrill Ave.

The suspect got out of the vehicle, which started on fire, and surrendered to authorities.

Law enforcement and fire and rescue services rendered aid and worked to suppress fires in the overall scene that spanned a city block.

Three injured occupants of vehicles were treated and released at the scene.

The suspect was transported to St. Agnes Hospital to be evaluated for injuries.

She will be transported to the Fond Du Lac County Jail with the following charges:

  • Operating while intoxicated causing injury
  • First degree reckless endangering safety
  • Operating while revoked due to alcohol or controlled substance refusal
  • Fleeing and eluding an officer
  • Three counts of felony bail jumping

Marijuana was located during a search of the vehicle and additional charges may result once the investigation is completed.

Police say she was out on two signature bonds out of Brown County for charges of possession with intent to deliver fentanyl, a second OWI and felony bail jumping.

She was also out on a $250 cash bond in Fond Du Lac County for two counts of felony bail jumping, and a felony probation for fleeing and eluding with two counts of bail jumping in Ozaukee County.

Fond Du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt stated in a press release:

“This young suspect, who already has a lengthy criminal history, left a massive path of destruction in downtown Fond du Lac on a Friday evening. She terrorized dozens of our citizens and visitors who were downtown to enjoy the start to the weekend. We’re thankful no one was killed and wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured. This is the second serious and reckless high-speed crash along this stretch of Main Street already this year, and in this case a deputy was placed in a no-win situation – pursue and attempt to apprehend a reckless suspect who was likely to cause a crash, or terminate pursuit hoping the suspect would stop the reckless driving but knowing they would likely crash before doing so. We appreciate the prompt and coordinated response with our communications center, law enforcement, and fire/rescue partners who worked together to mitigate what could have been a very tragic situation tonight.”
