1 dead after car with children inside crashes into a pole in Washington County

TOWN OF ERIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Washington County Sheriff's Office says speed is believed to be a factor in a crash that killed one person Tuesday night, Sept. 21.

It happened around 5:49 p.m. near Donegal Rd. in the Town of Erin.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting a car hitting a telephone pole. The caller stated that the driver was slumped over the front passenger seat and nonresponsive and that there were two children in the car.

Deputies and Hartford Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the crash. They found the vehicle to have extensive damage to the drivers side. The driver was extricated from the vehicle and assessed by rescue and was reported deceased.

The two children are not believed to have any injuries. They were taken to Children's Hospital as a precaution.

A portion of Donegal Rd was closed for four hours as the accident reconstruction team investigated. An initial investigation of the scene revealed that the car was traveling eastbound when it exited the roadway and struck the telephone pole on its left.

The investigation is still open at this time.

A few residents lost power as a result of the crash.
