Youngest state lawmaker sworn in in special ceremony in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- There was a special swearing-in ceremony for Wisconsin's youngest state lawmaker in Milwaukee on Friday.
Kalan Haywood was elected in November to represent the 16th District. Haywood is just 19 years old and is a student at Cardinal Stritch University. He says he wants to focus on education, jobs, and safety while serving his district.
"Education and jobs are how you break the cycle of poverty, breaking the cycle of poverty increases safety, so overall it improves the quality of life for residents," State Rep.-elect Kalan Haywood (D) Milwaukee said. "I'm ready to get the work done, so I'm feeling great."
Haywood has served as Milwaukee's Youth Common Council President and helped develop initiatives with Milwaukee Public Schools. He will officially take his oath of office in Madison on Monday with all members of the Wisconsin State Assembly.
