Words take center stage as QWERTYFEST MKE celebrates Milwaukee's typewriter legacy

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee, the city renowned as the birthplace of the QWERTY keyboard layout, is hosting an event to honor its legacy. QWERTYFEST MKE aims not only to celebrate the typewriter as a writing tool, but to also celebrate words, publications and art.

The weekend-long festival, from Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25, marks the 155-year anniversary of Christopher Latham Sholes's invention of the QWERTY layout typewriter in Milwaukee.

The event comes as a tribute to the continued use of the QWERTY layout on modern-day devices such as cell phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops.

Events are scheduled throughout the city, including at The Bindery in Bay View, offering a range of activities from parties and workshops to tavern hangouts and shopping excursions. Attendees can anticipate a cash bar, raffle, crossword challenge and typing stations among other features.
