Woman charged with fatally shooting Milwaukee dentist in Brown Deer pleads not guilty
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The woman accused of killing a Milwaukee dentist in Brown Deer over an argument about loud music pleaded not guilty in court Monday morning.
Twenty-seven-year-old Keionna McGowan is charged with second degree reckless homicide in connection to the death of 41-year-old dentist Akintunde Bowden. In court, McGowan waived her right to a preliminary hearing.
“You are Keionna McGowan, you are 27 years old, and you have completed 13 and a half years of schooling," said Milwaukee County Court Commissioner Susan Roth.
In under three minutes, McGowan's next court appearance was scheduled for June 12. McGowan is accused of fatally shooting Bowden on April 19 at an apartment complex near Park Plaza Court and Brown Deer Road. Brown Deer police say when they entered McGowan's apartment, they saw Bowden with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen. McGowan told police Bowden asked her to turn her music down. She agreed, but says Bowden returned a second time, kicking her door. That's when she shot him.
Bowden's father, Nathaniel Bowden, lives in Chicago. He was at McGowan's plea hearing Monday morning.
“My son’s gone. I mean he’s actually gone. We put him away over the weekend," said Nathaniel Bowden. “I want a conviction. I mean, it's a loss. I mean, it's a great loss. It's a spiritual loss. It’s a psychological loss. It’s all kinds of losses.”
Previously, during intake court, Court Commissioner Barry Phillips stated there were multiple inconsistencies between the arrest report and the criminal complaint — including whether or not Bowden was intoxicated. McGowan stated he was drinking beer, but Brown Deer police say they only found a can of sparkling water next to his feet.
Nathaniel says no matter how long it may take; he plans on being at every court appearance until his son gets justice.
“We gonna let the system play out," said Nathaniel. “Every time. We’ll be here. For him. We owe that to him."
