Butler Police squad car hit in chase and crash, woman arrested

BUTLER, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A woman is in custody after police in Butler say she led them on a chase and hit one of their squad cars before crashing the vehicle she was driving.

It happened Wednesday around 4:30 p.m.

According to the Village of Butler Police Department, officers stopped a vehicle in the area of W. Arden Place and N. 125th Street. When speaking with the driver, officers said they could smell marijuana.

When police asked the woman to get out of the vehicle, she put it in gear and fled the area. Officers pursued the woman northbound on N. 124th Street to W. Silver Spring. The driver turned west onto W. Silver Spring Road and hit a utility pole causing a power outage in the area.

The driver then headed southbound again on N. 124th Street in the wrong lane, driving head-on towards a Butler squad car. The officer had to swerve to avoid being hit, although the squad was hit in the rear driver's side, disabling the police vehicle.

The suspect continued westbound on W. Silver Spring with another Butler officer in pursuit. The suspect turned southbound on Lilly Road where she lost control of the vehicle and flipped the car onto its side.

The 20-year-old woman was taken into custody and taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Charges of fleeing and eluding an officer, recklessly endangering safety, and resisting arrest will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office.

Police say no one was hurt in the incident.
