Wisconsin dairy farmers worry about impact of tariffs

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Dairy Industry may be in trouble if President Trump's trade war continues.

Many farmers are already struggling and worried about what's going to happen next.

"The tariffs are really impacting in a roundabout way. The milk prices as well as commodity prices for us, and that does impact what we make on a daily basis," said Ashley Claussen, farmer.

Last week, the President threatened a 5% tariff on all goods from Mexico.

The tariffs would go in effect as early as next week.

Some farmers say tariffs could have a negative impact early on, but it wouldn't stay that way if the US can reach a fair agreement.

"I think in the long run, it's going to be positive for us, you know, working these tariffs out, that's what we need," said Jeremy Zirbel, farmer.

Wisconsin farmers are also impacted by tariffs from China.

Last month, the President announced a $16 billion bailout for American farmers hurt by the trade war with China.
