West Allis Firefighter Taken to Hospital After 40-Unit Apartment Blaze

The West Allis Fire Department responded to a 40-unit apartment fire Saturday morning at 3409 S. Willmer Road in West Allis.

Some of the 93 occupants were able to return to the building later Saturday afternoon while others were unable to return. Most had the opportunity to retrieve medications, a few cloths, pets and a few necessities.

Two apartments were damaged by the fire and another half dozen apartments suffered water damage.

One West Allis Firefighter suffered potential heart problems while fighting the fire and was taken the hospital and released. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The Red Cross has opened 18-cases for assistance with nine of the units being provided emergency housing (hotel) support. Overall assistance included ensuring all medical needs are being met, recovery information, blankets and comfort kits with personal care items. Longer term recovery will continue throughout the coming days as the building is assessed and repairs begin. Many units will be displaced for an extended period of time.
