'We're proud of it:' Milwaukee family celebrates their 100th Independence Day gathering at Lake Park

MILWAUKEE (CBS58) -- The Fourth of July is about patriotism, picnics, parades, fireworks and perhaps most of all family.

One Milwaukee family has been keeping their star-spangled tradition alive for 100 years.

For 100 years, the Casalena's they've been coming together to celebrate Independence Day in the same spot in Lake Park, blending their Italian roots with their love for America in a way that's as unique as it is heartwarming.

"The lady who started the whole picnic in 1925 and that's Grandma Emma," said Phyllis Wiegratz, Casalena family member.

"These are the brothers everybody here is decedents of these brothers. All they had to eat because they were poor was peanut butter and jelly sandwiches," said Wiegratz.

Since immigrating from Italy, the Casalena family has grown together through tradition.

"It's just so impactful to think about that as we have this amazing family here that has kept it going," said Chris Casalena, Casalena family member.

As America turns 249 years old, the family say they're proud to have celebrated here in Milwaukee for nearly half that time. Honoring ones that started it all.

"What a sacrifice and what adventure they took and we honor them for that and we're very thankful for that and we're proud of it, and you can tell by this amazing turnout and all of the camaraderie that we have as a family and again, it's a combination, family, pride, and country pride," said Casalena.

To commemorate the day, Milwaukee County Supervisor Sheldon Wasserman presented the Casalena's with a proclamation from Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley for their 100-year anniversary celebration.

Now the Casalena's say it's time to pass the torch to the next generation.

"It's on us now to keep it going so I know a handful of us have already talked about doing that," said Jonathan Wiegratz, Casalena family member.
